Caló des Moro – south Mallorca

A tiny spit of white sand closely guarded by an unforgiving but conquerable rocky outcrop, Caló des Moro resembles a castaway shore in every sense. Reached by a descent across the sandy rocks, the secluded beach slopes down to a shallow stretch of crystalline waters that spill out between pine tree-covered cliffs. There’s no beach bar, toilets or other facilities, but the reward is rugged barefoot beauty instead.

Cala Mesquida – northeast Mallorca

Occupying a protected area, and home to incredible birdlife, Cala Mesquida is a deep, wide stretch of sand in undeveloped surroundings, with rolling dunes and translucent turquoise seas. Cala Mesquida can get busy, but never feels overcrowded, and is ideal for families (sun loungers are for hire here). Expect laidback vibes and open landscapes.

Sa Calobra – west Mallorca

Sa Calobra is unlike any other beach on Mallorca. What it lacks in powdery white sands, it makes up for in a hidden cove at the end of a dramatic gorge. From Sa Calobra’s modest first beach, follow the paved path through a narrow tunnel and you’ll emerge on a show-stopping pebbled enclave, fringed with cerulean waters, and hemmed between two rock faces.

Cala Varques – east Mallorca

Although there’s a 20-minute walk from the car park to Cala Varques, the pay-off is near-isolated sands, twinkling shallow waters and a relaxing atmosphere. Just a little way south of Porto Cristo, the striking beach offers prime snorkelling opportunities with an easy-breezy ambience. No sun loungers for hire but vendors do sell snacks and drinks.

Cala Formentor – northeast Mallorca

A wild beach with pines growing all the way up to the water’s edge, Cala Formentor is a popular destination for locals and tourists. The beach is 1km long (and 20 minutes from Pollensa) so you’re likely to find a relatively secluded spot on its pristine white sands, well-shaded by the trees. There’s plenty in the way of watersports too, with paddle boarding and windsurfing among various other options available.

Playa de Muro – northeast Mallorca

If you’re after talcum powder sands, Playa de Muro is Mallorca’s largest sandy beach, at an enormous 4km long. Spanning the coast of the small town of Muro, it retains a laidback feel, framed by pine and juniper trees, and smart beach restaurants. Its gentle, sandy slopes and warm, shallow waters make Playa de Muro ideal for young children.
