Unmistakably Mallorcan, Port de Sóller is a charismatic village that invites a slow pace of life. Honey-hued buildings line the harbourfront while sailing boats bob in azure waters, framed by a curve of golden sand.

Location

Framed by the dramatic Tramuntana mountains, Port de Sóller lies on Mallorca’s northwest coastline, 30km from the island’s capital, Palma.

When to go

With hot summers and mild winters, Mallorca is a year-round destination. If you’re chasing the sun, visit Port de Sóller between June and September. Even in peak season, it never gets too crowded. The months either side – April, May, October and November – are quieter but still have pleasant temperatures.

What to see

The star of the show is Port de Sóller’s marina, where row upon row of traditional sailing boats and yachts occupy on the water. Take a stroll along the palm-lined promenade and admire the maritime display, and head for the lighthouse on the cliffs.

You can learn about the village’s history at the Sóller Marine Museum, and visit the impressive churches of Sant Ramon de Penyafort and Santa Caterina. Port de Sóller has one of the finest sunsets on the island, so find a good spot to end the day in the reds, oranges and purples of the fading sun.

What to do

Port de Sóller has plenty to experience. Take a trip on its traditional wooden tram, the Orange Express, for a scenic journey to the neighbouring village of Sóller, a little further inland.

Surrounded by the Tramuntana mountains, Port de Sóller also has numerous hiking trails, such as the long-distance Dry Stone Route which passes through the village.

If you want to take in Mallorca’s rugged coastline, hire a boat from the port and speed out on an island excursion.

For shoppers, Port de Sóller’s elegant waterfront boutiques are lined with local handicrafts, stylish clothes and accessories.
