From luxurious treatment rooms to sparkling infinity pools, our spas are designed to be destinations where people can let go of everyday stresses and strains. However, if you are unable to take time out for a visit, there are a few things you can do at home to help recharge your batteries and revive your mind.

Excite your senses

Think about walking into a spa. Even before stepping into a treatment room, it’s likely you will have heard calming music, wrapped yourself in a comfortable robe and spent a few seconds allowing your eyes to adjust to the soft lighting. Sensory experiences such as sight, sound, taste and touch are all part of a visit to a spa – so think about how you can incorporate them into your at-home treatments. Candles scented with lavender, camomile or sandalwood, a glass of ice-cold water that’s infused with fruit, and a steaming cup of herbal tea to enjoy at the end of your beauty ritual are all easy add-ons that can make a world of difference.

Music to suit your mood

Speaking of creating a restful acoustic experience, instrumental pieces of music are a great choice, as lyrics can sometimes be distracting. You could select classical compositions and contemporary chill-out tracks, or search for the sounds of the natural environment via a range of online streaming services – perhaps birds singing in a flower-filled garden, the chirping and calling of a tropical rainforest or snow falling in a faraway forest.

Create a beautiful bath

Submersing the body in water has been an important wellness tradition since the Ancient Romans first built sumptuous bathing houses. We know that taking a bath can lower stress levels and help stimulate the release of mood-improving endorphins so, once a week, replace your daily dip with a soothing soak. Add scented oils, salts or bubbles to suit your bath-time mood – lemon and rosemary are uplifting, while lemongrass and marjoram can soothe tired muscles – place a cushion or towel behind your head so your neck is supported and apply a face mask or deep-conditioning hair treatment to heighten the pampering experience. And, just because you see your bathroom every day, it can still be elevated to a place of beauty by adding a few plants, which will thrive on being in a steamy environment – orchids add a pop of colour, while succulents such as aloe vera channel a tropical vibe. Gaze at your leafy surrounds and let your imagination whisk you away to the dramatic clifftop location of our Talise Spa in Mallorca.

Bring the hammam to your home

Covering 8,200sqm, you might be wondering how you can possibly recreate the Turkish bath experience on offer at the Talise Ottoman Spa at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray, which sees guests moving from hot to cool rooms before enjoying a full-body exfoliation and cleanse. But by allowing the water in your shower to run cold for a couple of minutes you can improve blood flow, so take the plunge when you next bathe. In addition, moving a body brush across your skin in short, circular strokes will address dry patches and stimulate collagen production, or you could take inspiration from the scrub that features in treatments at SPA at Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort and is made by blending Arabian coffee grounds with argan oil. Substitute easy-to-find ingredients such as sugar and coconut oil and you’ll quickly have a homemade body polish.

Making beauty treatments at home

Homemade beauty products

Take to the kitchen to make a complexion-boosting face mask by combining one tablespoon each of turmeric, raw honey and milk – thanks to the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of the ingredients, it can soothe skin and even out any sensitive areas. That’s the reason why we use honey from Jumeirah Frankfurt’s rooftop apiary in treatments at the Talise Spa. More local inspiration comes in the form of Chinese medicine. While it’s best to allow the experts at Talise Spa at Jumeirah Nanjing to conduct cleansing cupping sessions, you can try the ancient technique of facial massage using a jade or rose quartz roller at home. And to really complete the at-home spa experience, swap cotton wool pads for real cotton towels when giving yourself a facial. Soak a few small towels or flannels in hot water and wring them out so they are just damp before gently sweeping them over your skin for a professional pampering touch. Finally, take some time to practice mindfulness in a specially assigned relaxation zone – this might be your bedroom, a quiet corner of your garden or while soaking in the bath. Focus on your breathing or use an app to guide you through a meditation session.
