The laidback coastal region of Jimbaran is a spread of sleepy villages and talcum-powder sands, framed by rugged limestone cliffs. From its best beaches and surf spots to what to eat, we show you how to get the most out of this beautiful Balinese enclave.
Occupying a curve of Bukit Peninsula, south of capital Denpasar, Jimbaran is a 20-minute drive from Ngurah Rai International Airport.
Barefoot beach vibes topped with a pinch of glamour, Jimbaran is full of Indonesian tradition. The main village is a cluster of shops and local life with the addition of some stylish resorts. The beautiful 18th-century Pura Ulun Siwi temple at its centre is a highlight.
Jimbaran Beach is considered one of Bali’s best; a 4km stretch of honey-hued sand. Dotted with sun loungers and lined with cafés and fish restaurants, the beach is lapped by cerulean waters that invite guests to for a refreshing dip. Due to its western-facing location, Jimbaran Beach is a great place to watch the sunset. Get comfortable at one of its laidback bars to watch the sun glisten on the Indian Ocean as it dips below the horizon.
A little further south, Dreamland Beach is framed by steep cliffs and carpeted with dazzling white sand. It’s also one of Bali’s most renowned surfing beaches, with challenging reef breaks that draw intrepid riders from around the world.
Close to Dreamland Beach and overlooking the ocean, New Kuta Golf is a championship-standard course in lush, scenic surroundings. Visitors can play a round of nine or 18 holes. Top tip: tee off during its sunset golf sessions for even more stunning vistas.
Jimaran is the place for a leisurely seafood dinner enjoyed right on the beach. Nothing beats watching the catch of the day being hauled to shore on colourfully painted fishing boats, and then dining on it shortly afterwards. Pick what you fancy and it’ll be cooked to order at one of the many warungs (cafés and stalls) that line the beach. Don’t miss their signature ‘thousand spice’ dipping sauce.
Or, pay a visit to Jimbaran Bay Fish Market to find freshly caught prawns, lobsters and snapper. Get there early to select the freshest. For artisanal Indonesian produce such as Balinese coffee, as well as smoked meats and cheeses, Sereh Gourmet Supermarket in Jimbaran is well stocked.
